To be eligible for FMLA and employee must have worked for a covered employer for at least a total of 12 months and for a minimum of 1,250 hours over the preceding 12-month period. This leave is granted for:
The birth of a child
For a new child that is placed with the employee through foster care or adoption
For the employee’s own serious health condition
To care for a family member with a serious illness
For family members of an employee entering the military or for an injured military service member
In addition to the entitlements under the FMLA, some organizations allow additional time off for the birth of a child or to care for a family member for up to 6 months.
