Did you know that under the Family and Medical Leave Act eligible employees are entitled to take up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave each year for specified family and medical reasons without the fear of losing their jobs?  This applies to all private-sector employers with 50 or more employees and all public service agencies.

To be eligible for FMLA and employee must have worked for a covered employer for at least a total of 12 months and for a minimum of 1,250 hours over the preceding 12-month period.  This leave is granted for:

The birth of a child

For a new child that is placed with the employee through foster care or adoption

For the employee’s own serious health condition

To care for a family member with a serious illness

For family members of an employee entering the military or for an injured military service member

In addition to the entitlements under the FMLA, some organizations allow additional time off for the birth of a child or to care for a family member for up to 6 months.
