What is Networking? Networking is defined as the action or process of interacting with others to exchange information and develop professional or social contacts.
What do we expect to get from networking, what is the value of networking, what do we really get from networking, are the connections authentic?
Being an introvert and networking is not an easy thing. It is extremely difficult as an introvert to be in a room full of strangers and having to introduce ourselves and engage in meaningful conversation which often causes anxiety and exhaustion. However, as uncomfortable as it is, we do it, in hopes of building connections that result in lasting relationships and effective working relationships.
When you do make that type of connection you feel the experience was well worth it. However, for the most part, the experience feels like just introductions and is similar to meeting long lost relatives at a family reunion that you have never met and/or have not connected with in numerous years. You vow to stay connected but the moment you leave the reunion you do not connect again until the next reunion, when you both decide to attend again.
How do we change the networking experience?
We never give up!
Choose related events to attend
Listen and think before speaking
Approach individuals rather than groups
Be prepared for the awkwardness
